This has been looked at 3 times by two different shops and both are at a complete loss as to what is causing the noise, even though they heard and felt it themselves while test driving. So far the sway bar links have been replaced, the exhaust heat shield has been checked & tightened, but these have not solved the problem. One shop had it up on a lift, did the same thing and did not get any odd noises. When I sit idle and hold in that RPM range, there is no sound at all - the engine sounds fine. I'm not sure if it's merely something hardware related or if it's something in the engine itself. It almost feels like something is loose and the harmonic frequency of 40 mph and 1500 RPM is causing it to shake violently. Note that this is NOT a drone noise or normal sound. Over the past few months the vibration has moved to a wider range of 1400-1600 RPM and 40 - 45 mph. This vibration can be felt in the seats and the steering wheel. Maybe someone in the DT community has had this issue: I can feel EVERY small bump and crack in the road, the ride is absolutely terrible. As soon as the vibration starts, you can let off the gas or step on the gas to change the RPMs and it instantly stops. The vibration can hold for as long as 1-2 seconds, but does come and go. Whenever i'm travelling about 40 mph and 1500 rpm, there is a pretty bad rattle noise which is accompanied by a vibration. Vibration worse when turning right vs left is unusual - this with or without passengers?This problem started out of nowhere about 3 months ago and has steadily become worse. Could try throwing in a sandbag in rear to shift some weight rearward, see if that does anything different. Could try shifting the resonance - back in the early 80's, when Ford came out with that "jellybean" Taurus body style - they had lots of resonance at speed, they fixed that by gluing down two brick-like dampers in the trunk. all can cause these vibrations at speed. Worn mounts, worn suspension, bad strut, abnormal tire wear, bad u-joint, bad CV joint, worn bushings, etc. What type of machine did they use for tire balance, was it capable of road-force testing (Hunter GSP9700 machine)? Swapping around the wheels sort of eliminates the possibility of a bent wheel. Can't rule out tires, wheels, or powertrain/drivetrain. Interesting plot - assuming that was picked up using the accelerometer in a smart phone or similar? Vibration is present throughout, though it definitely shows reinforcement typical of a resonance issue. Car travels straight.Īny thoughts what it might be? What I should check? I replaced front and rear brakes, front and rear rotors, shim kits, lubed pins, etc. (See the diagram attached for profile of the shaking I'm feeling). Heck, I had a 1993 4Runner with a moonroof that never made a peep. The rattle is bad enough that I don't see how I could 'live with it' for another 8 years or so. Lastly, I notice the vibration more when I turn right than left. They say they need to get the service foreman involved. It's a light vibration, but enough to feel it constant. Second, when on the highway, 60mph+ the vibration increases with speed. I don't really feel it directly in the steering wheel. Happens for approximately 10 seconds then goes away. Not sure, but wondering if someone could help me out.įirst, 30-45mph it can randomly vibrate through the floor and dash, and sometimes seat. Replacing the ECM usually solves this problem. Symptoms include loss of power, jerking and hesitating when shifting, and launching on third gear. I have a vibration in my 2013 RAV4 XLE AWD, 73K miles, that I think is coming from the drivetrain. Failing ECM: The ECM (engine control module) in 2000-2004 RAV4 tends to fail prematurely, causing the transmission to act erratically.
